The top 6 primary tag rugby teams met at Kingsbridge Community College to battle it out for the opportunity to represent South Hams at the county competition in June.
Holbeton, Ugborough and Stowford from the Ivybridge community took on Kingsbridge, Loddiswell and Church School Federation from the Kingsbridge area in an afternoon of highly competitive, quality rugby. With only one team going through the next round, the stakes were high from the off!
The games were excellently refereed by boys from Kingsbridge Community College and each team played all of the other teams, scoring points depending on whether they won, lost or drew. At the end of the tournament Stowford, with 4 wins and a draw, had accrued the most points, meaning that they not only reclaimed the South Hams Cup that they had had to relinquish to Kingsbridge last year, but also go forward as South Hams representative at the Devon Summer Games next month.
Stowford coach, Alec Bradley, said, “With the first game against Kingsbridge being a repeat of last year’s final, the pressure was on from the start. Edging a win in that game gave the team a real boost. The only team to who threatened to spoil their afternoon was Holbeton, who fought back from a 2 try deficit to claim a draw. The team grew in confidence as the afternoon progressed and ended the event with a really emphatic win in a match which saw some of our younger players getting into their stride. It was a really amazing performance from a squad who have grown and developed during the season and reaped their just reward for all their hard work. Many thanks to our parents, who not only provided transport, but also fantastic support- we are glad we did you proud!”
